Cold weather is on the way, and your coats have probably been sitting in the closet since spring. Here’s how to get winter outerwear clean and ready, and when to leave it to the professionals.
Can I Wash My Coat at Home?
Always start with the care label. Many synthetic jackets and some down jackets are machine-washable. Wool coats, leather, suede, structured blazers and anything labeled dry clean only should be professionally cleaned.
Tips for Washing a Down Jacket
- Zip all zippers and close snaps, and empty the pockets.
- Use a gentle cycle with cold or warm water and a small amount of mild detergent.
- Wash it in a large front-loading washer so the jacket isn’t crushed. Our 30 and 40 pound washers work well.
- Dry on low heat for a long time, stopping every 20 minutes to fluff the feathers. Dryer balls or clean tennis balls help break up clumps.
- Make sure it’s fully dry before hanging it up.

Plan Ahead
Leather and specialty items take longer, so bring them in early in the season. And before you put winter coats away in spring, have them cleaned. Stains and body oils set over the summer and are much harder to remove later.
